The start of it all…
Our story began in 1981 when Jerry Bishop not only became a Master Electrician but purchased his uncle’s electric company, Bishop Electric, as well. Over the years, Jerry worked on various electrical projects and took notes on what his customers wanted – quality workmanship and products, convenience and simplicity of product use.
Lighting controls was an element of the electrical industry that was growing in popularity as larger homes were being built in the outlying Des Moines metro area. Unfortunately, there were not many options to choose from in the area, nor was there someone who could educate the customers on the technology.
What are lighting control systems?
Lighting Controls systems are comprised of both automated lighting functions and motorized and automated shading. Simple examples would be the use of a dimmer switch on a dining room light. A more advanced approach is having the lights in your home turn on in a programmable sequence as you are within a certain proximity of your home making your welcome that much more inviting.
Shade controls allow for the natural light of the outdoors be appropriately adjusted depending on time of day, if you are away from home, or to provide privacy for when you are. Having motorized shades reduces clutter of cords and allows for clean, sophisticated looks in any space. Automated shades rise and fall with the sun to provide ample lighting inside the space without being blinding.
How Lutron provided Lighting Control answers…
Lutron was a successful lighting company whose roots began in the 1950s. The idea to control the intensity of lighting in your own home was not just radical but needed as existing solutions were not easily available for the general population and not ideal in a residential setting. After years of working to create a simple, cost-effective and overall cost-saving solution was created and in 1961 Lutron was born.
Lutron has continued to provide quality products that take the simple idea of a dimmer switch and transform it into hundreds of applications for any environment. While Bishop looked for a way to provide their customers with better solutions, Lutron was introduced to the company in 1998. Other lighting companies had approached Bishop in the past, but none had stood the test of time and carried a positive and growing reputation as Lutron had. After much training of the available lines offered, Bishop Electric was recognized as a Certified Dealer in 2003.
Since that time, new products have entered the Lutron product line becoming more efficient, requiring less energy and maintaining elegant design options to fit any project style.
“I have not ever offered a product of Lutron’s that I have myself not tried in my own home. I want my customers to know and understand how these systems work, how they add a modern feel to the space and that I stand behind what I am promoting. My commitment has always been to educate on how Lutron products can provide a solution to a problem you never knew you had. Take your car into consideration, some have never known a car to not have automatic locks as it is a standard feature. Lutron products do the same thing with their lighting control systems – it adds that level of comfort and convenience that you didn’t even know you were missing out on.” – Jerry Bishop
